MYSC Women Win WPL Championship...Again!

The MYSC Women made it two straight WPL League Championships by defeating
the WSC Majors in the final game played Sunday July 15, in Appleton.

After a hard fought scoreless first half, MYSC opened up the scoring when
Megan Strohm slotted home a beautiful shot in the box. In a controversial
decision, the goal was disallowed. MYSC later got on the board again (and
this time it counted) with a goal by Carly Peterson, but WSC answered before
the end of regulation, making for a 1-1 draw.

The first overtime saw MYSC go on top again early on a nice strike by Katie
Thurber, only to see WSC even it up once more before the 15 minutes were up.
A scoreless second OT saw the score remain 2-2 after 120 minutes. In the
ensuing PKs Carly Peterson scored first to get MYSC on the board, MYSC Keeper Megan Kurtz made two spectacular saves to help shut down the majors, Megan Strohm avenged her earlier pirated goal, by ripping the upper 90 to give MYSC Women their second straight league title.

To get to the final MYSC played a tough Appleton team which they beat 2-1 with 2 goals from Natalie Bullis, the second goal coming in the 91st minute with 3o seconds left to play of injury time.

In their next game MYSC disposed of FC Green Bay Orange with 2 goals in each half giving MYSC their final spot. Goals coming from Carly Peterson, a brace from veteran Nancy Rohrman and Holly Wilson added the 4th in the closing minutes of the game. WSC beat FC Green Bay Blue and Brookfield along the way.

July 21/22 MYSC will defend their Cup against the WSC Majors and will also play the WPSL FC Twente3 from Barrington IL at the Westport Soccer Complex. The rematch with WSC will be at 9:00am and the FC Twente3 game is at noon on Saturday the 21st.

MYSC U14 Girls Win State Cup

The MYSC U14 girls BLUE team had a very successful run at STATE CUP over the past few weeks. In the round robin portion of the Cup the girls outscored their three opponents 21-0 and had accumulated ALL sportsmanship points. In the Semi-final game, Appleton Fusion and MYSC met on Appleton’s home field. After a rain/storm delay mid-game, the MYSC girls proceeded to play some good soccer to win the game 3-0. On June 3, the much anticipated finals game between MYSC and FC Milwaukee started late due to heavy rain and storms. It was a hard fought game and a great game to watch on a very rainy, wet day. FC Milwaukee attempt at a score in the first half resulted in the goal being called off because the ball was hand-punched into the goal. Eventually FC Milwaukee scored with a long, high kick just out of the reach of the MYSC goalie. MYSC players never faltered and kept the pace of the game moving at a fast pace even in the rain and on a soggy field. Late in the 2nd half of regulation time, MYSC left footed a corner kick and was headed into the net for a goal. Score 1-1 was how regulation time ended. After 20 minutes of overtime with both teams’ defense tested over and over the score was still tied 1-1 and went to “kicks from the mark”. MYSC won 4-1 in penalty kicks. MYSC U14 girls, coaches, and parents all were excited at the outcome and proud of the girls’ accomplishment that was set as a goal for them in July 2006. Great Job girls and best wishes for success at Regionals in Des Moines June 22-27.

Team members: Glenna A, Anna B, Rachel C, Hannah E, Kaitlyn F, Ingrid G, Erin M, Brianna M, Katy P, Hannah R, Dana R, Autumn S, Lora S, Morgan S, Teighlor T, Mariama T as well as Stefanie T and Shannon M that served as alternates that helped get the team to the finals. Team Blue coached by Bobby Nichols and Tom Kuehne.
